The Montessori Philosophy

Over a century old, the Montessori Philosophy of instruction is based on the work of that trailblazer of Pre-K Educator, Dr. Maria Montessori. The Montessori Method has proved ground breaking, in its ability to connect with children’s diverse interests and abilities, to promote rapid academic, and educational advancement. This Montessori Method, is the foundation upon which the curriculum and activities are developed, both at the Falls Church Montessori School, as well as its sister campus in Stone Ridge/South Riding.

The Montessori Method of instruction breaks with traditional approaches in numerous significant ways. For conceptual purposes, it is helpful to think of teachers as conductors or facilitators of an intricate orchestra of students and young minds, rather than drill sergeants of unruly young children.

Teachers guide their students through a prepared environment, which is the classroom, among lessons and activities which both tease a child’s interest or curiosity and are skill/development appropriate for each particular child.

In approaching students in this manner, children are working on lessons and activities which interest them. As a result, they are learning exponentially quicker, earlier, and more efficiently than by traditional methods.

The Montessori Method essentially divides up the curriculum into five more focused genres:

  • Mathematics
  • Language
  • Science
  • Practical life
  • Sensorial

Falls Church Montessori classrooms are equipped with a series of lessons from each of the five genres, and in varying degrees of complexity. Students, with one-on-one attention from faculty, work through the various lessons at their individual pace.

Children may elect to work on all five genres in one day or simply stick to one. Children are provided the choice and independence to make these types of decisions for themselves and, as such, develop a more independent, self-guided mode of thinking that showcases their individuality and creative thought processes.
